Setting up an email account in Mozilla thunderbird

Select Tools > Account options from the Thunderbird menu bar; click . You now have to go though a series of dialogue boxes, filling in the appropriate details in each.

Note that the values show in the images below are not the actual ones that you should use. They are values that I used for testing, and are only intended for illustration.

The first box just says that you want to set up an email account.

In the second box you enter your real name and your full email address.

You have the choice of receiving mail using either the IMAP or the POP protocols. If you do not understand this bit, choose IMAP.

The user name that we use is identical to your email address, so enter that again.

The name that you choose to give this account is up to you.

The next box is purely a display box for you to check the information. It gives you a chance to go back and correct any errors.

Finally, thunderbird will try to connect to the server and collect your messages. At this point it needs to know your password.

The above sequence has set you up to receive emails. You now have to set up for sending.

As before, click on Tools > Account Settings, but this time select Outgoing server.

You should select either SSL or TLS so as to obtain an encrypted channel. This avoids exposing your password on the net. The server name is mail.ohelavraham.org.uk. Check the Use name and password box and put your full email address in te User nae field.

We are currently using self-signed certificates. The first time that you connect over an encrypted channel you should be prompted as to whether you want to accept the certificate. Just click 'accept'. If you do not get such a prompt you should give serious consideration to how secure, or otherwise, your system is.

The wording of the warning will vary a bit depending on what software you are running, but it should always be a general mumble about inability to validate the certificate.
